What is Inland PLANet?
Just What Is Inland PLANet?
Inland PLANet is a not-for-profit volunteer organization based in San Bernardino and Riverside Counties, an area of southern California known as the "Inland Empire." Inland PLANet sponsors educational events that build awareness about the relationship between population issues and the well-being of people and the environment, both internationally and locally. Our goal is to help build U.S. support for local and international programs that provide access to voluntary family planning services, maternal health care, and women's education.
Inland PLANet is a grassroots campaign of community volunteers who came together under the auspices of the former national PLANet campaign in 2001, which was funded by the Packard and Hewlett Foundations. Inland PLANet hopes to continue the momentum begun under the national PLANet campaign and will continue to operate primarily in the area from Riverside to the San Bernardino Mountains.
Our work is directly supported by the Population and Habitat Campaign of the National Audubon Society (NAS) and its local affiliate the San Bernardino Valley Audubon Society (SBVAS); the Global Population and Environment Program of the San Gorgonio Chapter of the Sierra Club; the Population Coalition of Redlands, California; the Population Coalition. Population Action International has also provided assistance.
What Does Inland PLANet Do?
Inland PLANet sponsors educational events that build awareness about the relationship between population issues and the well-being of people and the natural environment, both internationally and locally. Our goal is to help build U. S. support for local and international programs that provide access to voluntary family planning services, maternal health care, and women's education.
Does Inland PLANet advocate abortion?
No. In fact, increased aid to family planning will significantly reduce abortions. Almost all abortions occur because there was little or no family planning before conception. If a woman does not want a child and can avoid conceiving, she can avoid an abortion. We see family planning as the true pro-life movement.
Inland PLANet Mission Statement
Inland PLANet's mission is threefold in that it seeks to educate the public on:
1. The connections between population growth, excessive consumption, and insufficient access to voluntary family planning programs; and how these connections interact to adversely affect both the environment and the quality of life* people experience across the globe;
2. The connections between voluntary international and local family planning programs, reproductive health care services, women's empowerment, and life-sustaining development, and how all these connections interact to favorably affect both the environment and the quality of life people experience across the globe, and;
3. The connections between local and global quality of life problems and solutions, and what the benefits are of thinking globally and acting locally.
(* Quality of life indicators typically used to determine the standard of life people experience include: health; environment; shelter; education; income; employment; recreation; energy availability; human rights; infrastructure; public safety, and; national security. A good reference is the Calvert-Henderson Quality of Life Indicators, 2000.)
