National Audubon Society Statement :

The mission of the National Audubon Society is to conserve and restore natural ecosystems, focusing on birds, other wildlife, and their habitats for the benefit of humanity and the earth's biological diversity. No single investment in human health, environmental protection, or economic and political stability can ever match investments made in international family planning. And yet, despite our enormous wealth, the U.S. is last among the top 20 countries contributing to international family planning assistance.

San Bernardino Valley Audubon Society Statement:

The San Bernardino Valley Audubon Society supports Inland PLANet because in the Inland Empire, we see the impact of population growth both locally and internationally.

Locally, we suffer from increasing population, which stresses the area's finite resources such as water and forests and increases pollution, creating health problems and contributing to global warming. Southern California's infamous urban sprawl has led to habitat destruction, deforestation, desertification, accelerated extinction of species, and infrastructure and social problems.

We also see the global impact here, because many birds fly south for the winter but the forests where they used to find food and shelter are now either gone or vastly diminished as a result of growing populations needing wood for fuel or land for agriculture. As a result, populations of birds that migrate from California to the tropics have dropped markedly over the last several years, in many cases by as much as half, in some cases even more.

A lack of access to basic medical services, including family planning, is the single most important factor in the continued exponential growth of the human population. Without good medical care, infant and child mortality are high. Parents try to have more children so that they can be assured that some will survive. The more children a woman has, the more likely she is to suffer pregnancy-related complications. Providing basic modern medical care and family planning to those women who do not currently have it will mean healthier families, longer life spans, and a healthier planet.

Sierra Club Statement:

Our planet is now home to more than 6 billion people - with a projected 50% increase in the next fifty years. The rate at which we consume and degrade natural resources jeopardizes the health of the planet and threatens the availability of clean water for generations to come. With almost one-half of the global population under the age of 25, the choices families make today will have a tremendous impact on the future. The health of our planet is directly linked to the health of families. Therefore, one of the most comprehensive ways to address rapid population growth is through voluntary family planning programs. The Sierra Club supports the highest levels of funding without restrictions for domestic and international family planning programs which includes assistance for clinics, reproductive health services and education, contraceptives and maternal and child health care. Meeting the basic needs for family planning and reproductive health services now is a necessary investment for an improved environmental future.
